Shungite cancelled out the toxicity of hexavalent chromium for living algae - 98-99% of cells survived

The short version

Potassium dichromate is a hexavalent-chromium compound - the carcinogen of "Erin Brockovich" fame, lethal to cells at low doses. A Russian team dosed a culture of living microalgae with it, then added shungite to the same water. The shungite didn't just reduce the harm; it effectively erased it.

What they did

The test organism was Scenedesmus quadricauda, a common green microalga used as a toxicity sensor. They ran three conditions: algae alone, algae + dichromate (3 mg/l), and algae + dichromate + shungite (100 g/l).

The result

- Dichromate alone: progressive cell death over the experiment
- Dichromate + shungite: living cells held at 98-99% for the whole run

In other words, the shungite pulled enough of the chromium out of solution (and/or neutralised its reactive damage) that the algae carried on almost as if the poison wasn't there.

Why it's worth knowing

It's one thing to show a sorbent lowers a metal concentration in a beaker. It's another to show living cells survive the dose because the mineral was present. This is a biological end-point - survival - not just a chemistry reading.
